ICELAND VOLCANO MARATHON 2026 Run through one of Earth's geological hot spots,on the rim of two volcanic craters and over black lava rock. This thrilling adventure run takes place in Mývatn, in northern Iceland, where the North Volcanic Zone splits the American and Eurasian continental plates. It is still an active volcanic area and the dramatic landscape is replete with ancient lava and steaming geysers. Entry to the run is in combination with a package, offering one night in Reykjavík and four nights in Mývatn. This gives you multiple opportunities to explore this otherworldly island. There are opportunities to visit Europe's largest waterfall, embark on a whale safari, hike through the castle-like lava formations of Dimmuborgir, and relax in a geothermally heated lagoon. As there is no set arrival time, you can book the flight that is most suitable for you. Note that transportation from Keflavík to Reykjavík is not included in this package. Airport shuttle buses or taxi providers are available at the arrival hall. The rest of the day is at your leisure. A tour to the Golden Circle with Tingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss is available to book for those arriving in the morning or early afternoon. See Package Add-ons for more information. Pre/post race accommodation in Reykjavík is also offered at an additional cost, if you would like to explore the capital. Meals: Not included  Day 2 – Thursday 25 June 2026: Iceland’s Scenic West Coast & Race Briefing Start day two with an early breakfast before you board the bus for a drive along the scenic west coast of the country with a knowledgeable guide ready to tell you all about Iceland. You will reach Akureyri by the afternoon, where the race briefing is delivered by the race officials. Here you will receive your race goodie bags while a stand-up snack meal is served. After the briefing, you will continue to Mývatn to check into our hotel. Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, and a stand-up snack meal included  Day 3 – Friday 26 June 2026: Mývatn Route Highlights Have a peek at the marathon route today through the Mývatn highlights tour. They will take you to spots such as the ancient lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the majestic Hverfjall crater, and the bubbling grey puddles at Hverir solfataras. In the evening, a pasta dinner prepared at the hotel awaits you for carbo loading, ready for the Race Day tomorrow! Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and pasta dinner.  Day 4 – Saturday 27 June 2026: Race Day The route is going to be a challenge, but don't forget about the weather either. Although you are in Iceland during the summer months, the temperature is unlikely to rise above 15 degrees Celsius, and might be accompanied by rain. The scenery is just as majestic, no matter whether there is sun or rain. As you reach the finishing line, you will celebrate your victory with a pizza lunch. And afterwards, return to your hotels via shuttle buses. After a celebratory dinner of your own, as an option, you can join them for the Jarbodin Nature Baths in Mývatn for a relaxing end to the day, soaking in the restorative natural waters. Meals: Breakfast and pizza lunch included  Day 5 – Sunday 28 June 2026: Relaxation, Optional Excursions & Celebration Dinner Today is your day to celebrate your victory! Take the day to relax at your leisure or consider signing up for one of our optional excursions. Please note that you can only participate in one of the excursion on this day. In the evening, you will come together—runners, supporters, and organizers—to celebrate all of your achievements with a festive dinner. Meals: Breakfast and dinner.  Day 6 – Monday 29 June 2026: Farewell Iceland You reach the end of your adventure today, as the morning bus drives you back south to Reykjavík for Keflavík International Airport (KEF). The expected arrival time is 14h30. Hence, it is not advisable to book your flight out of Iceland earlier than 16:30. It is possible to book a post-night accommodation in Reykjavík if your flight connection doesn't match today, or if you would like to further explore Iceland on your own. For those who are leaving for the airport, the bus departs from Mývatn at 06h00, and at 08h30 for those who have a post-night accommodation in Reykjavik. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why don’t you offer a travel package including flights? There is a selection of routes available and therefore we do not include the cost in our package. Flight prices change daily and are subject to availability. Generally the sooner you book the better the price. -- 2 of 3 -- Can I purchase marathon entry only? We cannot sell marathon entry only; it is sold together with accommodation booked through us as per the contractual agreement with the race organisers. What can I expect upon arrival in Keflavík? The Airport transfer is not included in the package because airport shuttle and/or taxi are economical and easy to navigate. Details and guidance on transport options and costs will be sent out with final documentation nearer the time. Do I need a passport and visa? Yes, you need a valid passport. South African passport holders require a visa for most destinations abroad, including Iceland. Travellers need to apply directly to the consulate and at their own expense. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your date of return to South Africa. We suggest you research visa requirements and your eligibility before committing to travel arrangements. If you have an RSA passport as well as a foreign passport (check whether this passport requires a visa for entry into Iceland) you must show the RSA passport when you exit/enter RSA. If you are a foreign citizen with permanent residency in South Africa you are required to travel with your original permanent residence certificate and RSA ID. If unsure please ask and we will guide you but advice and assistance can only be a guideline as we do not have access to your personal history/passport/visa history.
